CHAPTER
7
Aiden sat with his children after dinner and watched an episode of The Simpsons. They laughed together and had some ice cream for dessert. Once the credits were rolling at the end of the episode, he allowed them to play video games until their designated bedtimes, while he went to his bedroom and packed an overnight bag. His wife sat on the bed, reading her new John Grisham novel, and pretended that she wasnât upset. He knew she was, but he also knew that she would get over it. He loved her, but he was not going to let her stop him from doing the work that he loved.
Once his bag was packed, he went into the TV room and gave both of his kids a kiss goodbye. His wife followed him into the kitchen, where he was heading to the back door to leave.
âCan I at least get a kiss?â She asked him.
âOf course, honey,â Aiden said and then walked over to her and gave her a kiss and a hug. âIâll only be gone a night or two. Iâll be back before you know it.â
As she stood in silence, he turned and went out the back door. Squinting through the falling snow, he navigated to his pickup truck. The moon was full that night and only added to the excitement that he had clinging to his spine. When his secret place was found, he was worried that he wouldnât be able to hunt again. Now that he found a new space, he was thrilled. The blood was pumping rapidly through his veins as he started the truck and backed out of the driveway.
In the cover of darkness, he ran into his special hideaway, started the generator, and then ran back to his truck. It was all coming together now, he was so anxious he could hardly stand it. He drove to music from the classic rock station on his radio, it was currently playing Bohemian Rapsody by Queen. The snow was starting to fall harder but he knew the further he drove south it would lessen before stopping completely.
The drive was like a blur to him, the adrenaline that was pumping was squeezing his mind like a vice. He was unable to concentrate on his music, his thoughts racing. He knew it would subside though. Once he started working, he would think clearly, making sure everything was completed meticulously. As he reached his destination, his heartbeat slowed and he started to focus. He knew he would be right on time, she would be leaving the news studio any minute now. He parked his truck about half a block away from the news station, rolled his window halfway down, turned off his truck, and lit a cigarette. During his hunting and after was the only time he smoked, it was his ritual.
His next victim was Vicky Valentine, a prominent news reporter in the city of Ashville. She was at all the major happenings in town, whether it be crime or entertainment.
